In the world of retail, the "B" in billion usually signifies a win. But when that number refers to returns, it represents a structural crisis.

In my latest conversation, I sat down with Juan Hernandez-Campos, COO of Happy Returns (a UPS company), to pull back the curtain on how AI is finally being weaponized—not just for efficiency, but as a defense mechanism against a sophisticated wave of "decoy" fraud.

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE
AI in the fight against fraud and $850 Billion annual returns

We’ve transitioned from a temporary pandemic surge to a permanent structural shift. Returns now account for 16% to 18% of total retail sales. To put that in perspective, $850 billion is larger than the GDP of most countries.

Why it matters: Retailers are moving away from seeing returns as a "back-office problem" and are finally treating them as a core operational challenge. We are seeing a rise in Directors of Returns, signaling that the C-suite is finally waking up to the fact that this is a "pulp" on the P&L that can no longer be ignored.

The Rise of the "Decoy" Return

One of the most fascinating (and alarming) parts of our talk was the evolution of fraud. Juan highlighted a specific trend: The Decoy Return.

  • The Scam: A "bad actor" attempts to return a cheap knock-off or a "decoy" item in place of a high-end designer piece.

  • The Challenge: At a high-volume drop-off point (like a Return Bar), expecting a human employee to instantly distinguish between a generic black dress and a $1,000 designer SKU is an impossible task.

How Happy Returns is Using AI to Fight Back

Happy Returns is now deploying a two-layer AI defense system to protect retailer margins:

  1. Risk Scoring: Every return is now assigned a "Risk Score" (Low, Medium, or High) before it even moves.

  2. Computer Vision Audits: In the warehouse, AI works side-by-side with humans. The system takes high-resolution images of the item and analyzes the pattern of the fabric, button placement, and zipper types against a digital twin of the authentic product. a robot can learn your workflow from a video, your process is a product.”

SOLUTION

Proactive vs. Reactive Refund Logic: The real power of this tech isn't just catching a fake dress; it’s about timing. By verifying the authenticity of an item earlier in the reverse logistics journey, Happy Returns can flag fraudulent behavior before the retailer issues the refund. This moves the financial risk away from the brand and creates a major deterrent for organized fraud.
